Elektron Eye Technology is an ophthalmology equipment provider, specialising is ophthalmic instruments for the detection and monitoring of glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.

The product

Elektron Eye Technology had a design for a target bowl, which is a part of a visual field screener, a device that the patient looks at, and as such must be manufactured and kept pristine. It has an array of LEDs fitted to the rear and these are the stimuli that the patient responds to.

Challenge

The design was previously made by two manufacturers, with AV Engineering initially making the inner part. Elektron Eye Technology had a consistent problem of repeatable fit between the two parts, manufactured by two different suppliers.

Solution

Experienced team at AV Engineering was able to develop the manufacturing and assembly process that allowed them to make both inner and outer bowls, thus overcoming the challenge of fitting of two different parts.

Results

The implementation of the entire assembly from AV Engineering meant that a new technique could be used, where the LEDs were mounted en-masse, rather than individually by hand. This meant that the assembly time for the part was reduced by 80%.
